With the 2016 Ole Miss football home opener today, Oxford has been preparing for an increased number out-of-town visitors. Ranging from additional police personnel, restaurant operators, and retailers Oxford is ready to see its population essentially double for the next 48-hours.
Medical facilities have also taken efforts to be ready for those who need emergency treatment.
Baptist Memorial Hospital is one such facility that’s added extra staff.
“Home game days are staffed up with physicians, nurse practitioners and nursing staff to accommodate the influx of visitors in the community,” Tracy Hall, director of the emergency department said.
Hall says the most common medical issues the hospital sees is minor injuries that are usually are associated with falls.
“In addition to preparing the ER and EMS for game day, BMH-NM is contracted with the University to provide first aid coverage for those participating in the game as well as the spectators,” Hall said.
Baptist Memorial Hospital is 217-bed acute care facility serving the northern third of Mississippi. A new five-story hospital currently under construction will have 602,831 square feet, including 217 beds with more comprehensive medical and surgical services.
