Sinkhole Opens on Highway 6 Near Lamar Boulevard

Constant rain for the past five days created flooded roads and crumbled some infrastructure in the Oxford area.

The rain washed away the earth along Highway 6 near the Lamar Boulevard exit. MDOT crews got out there fast to fill in the worst of the damage.

Oxford Utilities worker Andrew Bridgman says with all this water, something like this was bound to happen.

“The water just found a path of least resistance which happens to be this ditch behind us off the bank of the road here and it went and took the dirt with it,” Bridgman said.

The city was also dealing with multiple water main breaks due to the excessive flooding in the area. That left some people without water at all and prompted the city to issue a precautionary boil water alert.

Meteorologists predict Oxford and Lafayette County will get one to one and a half inches of rain for Saturday with clearing skies and sun on Sunday.
