The Ole Miss soccer team moves to 4-1 on the season after defeating Western Kentucky 1-0 in double overtime on Thursday night.
Ole Miss’ lone goal came off the boot of junior Channing Foster in the 108-minute with a penalty kick.
Coach Matt Mott’s club had a chance to score early after kickoff in the first half as Sophie Dineen and Haleigh Stackpole played a give-and-go to create some space on the left-wing in the third minute. Dineen sent in a well-weighted cross that found Molly Martin’s head in the box but the junior’s attempt to redirect on goal went just wide.
The Rebel pressure continued to give WKU problems in the midfield, leading to a number of Hilltopper turnovers but the Rebels weren’t able to connect the final ball, settling for a 0-0 score at the halftime break.
The Rebels came out of the halftime break with renewed energy and dominated the vast majority of the 45 minutes. Ole Miss outshot WKU 9-4 in the second half, while also earning eight corners. However, the Rebels were unable to put any of their chances away, heading into overtime for the second-straight match.
The pace of the match was controlled by the Rebels throughout overtime and in the second 10 minute period it paid off as WKU was called for a foul in the box, that set up Foster’s winning attempt.
Ole Miss will head to Murray, Kentucky to take the pitch against Murray State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
