The University of Mississippi has officially signed 42 new athletes to a new collegiate sports program, Esports, in the hopes that they will be able to bring the Esports Egg Bowl Trophy back to Oxford.

Jimmy Palmer, Information Technology Coordinator for the Center of Manufacturing Excellence, is the faculty advisor for the club and has been there since the beginning.

“Put simply, Esports is electronic competitive gaming,” said Palmer. “The club was started in January of 2017.”

This new form of competition has only recently made its way to the Ole Miss campus but has been growing ever since.

It has grown so much that both the Ole Miss and Mississippi State Esports clubs decided to start an Egg Bowl competition to compete for Esports supremacy in the state.

This second annual Esports Egg Bowl event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5 in Starkville and is free to the public. Doors open at 10 a.m. and will be live-streamed for anyone that is unable to make the competition.

“We compete in seven different games to see which school comes out on top,” said Palmer.

The games include: Call of Duty, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends, Overwatch, Rainbow Six Siege, Rocket League and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Palmer and the rest of the team are very excited to compete against MSU in this event and the upcoming season.

“We were No. 1 in the nation after competition season last year and love to retain that title,” he said.
