Ole Miss Athletics announced on Monday that softball coach Mike Smith has been placed on administrative leave.
Interm athletic director Keith Carter released a statement on the situation:
“We are conducting an external audit of our softball program, and Coach Smith has been placed on paid administrative leave until its conclusion. We hope to conclude the audit by the end of the fall semester,” he said.
Smith has led the softball team to four NCAA Tournament appearances and advanced to the Super Regionals in 2017 and 2019. During his tenure, the Rebels have been successful on the diamond with 30 and 40-plus win seasons.
Prior to the start of the 2019 season, Smith was placed on paid leave during the weekend the team played in the Friends of Jaclyn Tournament in Orlando Feb. 7-9. Last season came to an end at Super Regionals in Tuscon, Arizona against the Arizona Wildcats.
Assistant coach Ruben Felix will serve as interim coach during the audit.
The Rebels kick off their season in January with workouts and practice. UM Athletics has not yet released a full game schedule.
