Friday holiday events and activities draw large crowds downtown

There is no closer holiday transition on the calendar than that of the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.
One minute, it’s all about the turkey and the pumpkin pie, nibbled from a groaning table with no elbowroom to spare –– one eye on the sports action spilling from the television set. And the next, it becomes a warm, winter vision of lighted trees, the faces of happy children, and all of the pageantry of the Yuletide season.
Though the consumer frenzy of Black Friday overshadowed the more traditional elements of the coming of the Christmas season in large cities, the small-town Christmas of old was on display throughout the day in Oxford
Those who came out to enjoy the Oxford Downtown Council’s Christmas Open House on the day after Thanksgiving were gifted with a stocking full of activities and events to enjoy –– from the official lighting of the tree at City Hall to horse-drawn carriage rides and the all important audience with Santa, replete with photos of the meeting that were instantly emailed home.
“People were shopping, there were Christmas trees in virtually every shop window, and the mood was happy and festive,” says Hotty Toddy.com writer and photographer John Allison.
The marathon day concluded with a raffle giveaway of Downtown Dollars and T-shirts throws to a crowd of several hundred locals gathered in from of City Hall.
