The Mississippi River Flood of 1927 is generally considered the greatest national disaster in U.S. history. The National Safety Council estimated deaths in the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta at 1,000. The flood directly affected 185,495 Mississippians. 41, 673 homes were flooded. 21,836 buildings were destroyed. 62,089 buildings were damaged. 6,873 cattle died. 31,740 hogs perished. 266,786 poultry drowned. The entire Delta crop was lost.
