Oxford Chargers Open 2014 Season at Jackson Prep
Football season officially kicks off Friday night as high schools across Mississippi suit up for the first time in 2014.
The Oxford Chargers will travel to the state capital to face Jackson Prep in their official season opener. This past Friday, though, the Chargers hosted their annual football jamboree at Ole Miss’ Vaught-Hemminway stadium. High schools from around north Mississippi were invited to play, but Oxford really challenged themselves by playing the powerhouse South Panola Tigers from Batesville.
South Ponala controlled the score for most of the game, until Oxford QB Jack Abraham connected with DK Metcalf for two quick scores. Oxford won 14-10, a true accomplishment for any Oxford football fan.
On Friday in Jackson, Coach Johnny Hill and the Chargers hope to start another undefeated regular season and return to the 5A state championship game.
With several new faces in the Charger lineup, Coach Hill says it will take time for the team build its own personality. “It doesn’t happen on the practice field, but out there during a ball game,” he said.
QB Abraham finished his sophomore season with big numbers — 3,572 passing yards and 38 touchdown passes.
Last season, Oxford took control of the game early by putting up 16 points to Jackson Prep’s seven at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. the Charges defeated the Jackson Prep Patriots 32-20 in front of the home crowd of Bobby Holcomb Field.
Kick off for the Oxford Charger vs. Jackson Prep Patriot matchup is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, August 22.
