On one of the coldest days this school year Della Davidson Elementary School (DDES) Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) members were busy preparing for a big day for the students: a Playground Fundraiser Kickoff. Both sleet and snow had fallen that morning before the first school bell rang, but the PTO was not going to a little wintery precipitation stop them.
The DDES PTO is on a mission for their school: raise $30,000 by Friday, December 19 to expand and enhance the school’s playground facilities for the current and upcoming students of Della Davidson Elementary School.
During the Playground Fundraiser Kickoff on November 13, students led the way on the first day of beautification with hands-on activities on the playground such as picking up trash, drawing lines on the basketball courts, and creating unique school playground signage.
“There is minimal playground equipment for the growing number of students at Della Davidson,” said Robinson. “Our PTO members are the superheroes: they are working to solve this problem through the support of the Oxford community and parents within the Oxford School District.”
Della Davidson Elementary School houses nearly 680 third and fourth graders, and school officials say they anticipate that number to grow.
“The current playground equipment is not sufficient for the growing number of students in the school,” said Robinson.
Lolita Gregory, co-chair of the DDES Playground Fundraiser added, “We are seeking the support of parents not only of Della Davidson students, but also the parents of Oxford Elementary School and Bramlett Elementary School students because they will eventually attend Della Davidson.”

During the kickoff event, community partners Home Depot and Sherwin Williams chipped in and spruced up the playground area by planting trees and plants, repairing playground benches and more.
Gregory added that the support of the Oxford community along with donations from area businesses is crucial to ensure the success of the large playground project.
“Before we started the project, we surveyed the school students, teachers and staff about their needs for a playground update,” said Gregory. “The survey results listed requests such as shade structures, soccer fields, tether balls, swings, slides, climbing structures, grass and even trees. If we succeed at raising the money for this project, we will be able to assist the school with implementing several of these requested playground enhancements.”
