Sinkhole Vanishes as Quickly as Found, MDOT Resurfaces Hwy. 278 Thursday

It appeared abruptly last week, and tomorrow the evidence will disappear.

Mississippi Department of Transportation officials will be repaving the now gravel section of Highway 278/Highway 6 eastbound. Work will begin at 7 a.m. Thursday and end around 5 p.m. the same day. Traffic delays are expected during that section and alternate routes should be taken if possible.

Though the 31-foot hole that appeared in the right-hand lane of one of Oxford’s two main highways has since been repaired and filled in, it gave Oxonians a shock on the way to work April 29.

Of course, once the situation was under control and no one was hurt, we also had some fun with the rarity, too.
