Ole Miss’ McGuigan Named SEC Freshman of the Week
For the fifth straight week, an Ole Miss track & field athlete has been named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week. This time it’s men’s hammer thrower Dempsey McGuigan, who received the honor from the league office Tuesday.
McGuigan, who hails from London, England, and is of Irish descent, earns the award for the second time this outdoor season.
He placed third overall (second among collegians) in the LSU Invitational hammer throw this past Saturday with a toss of 214-5, just shy of his school record of 215-1 set earlier this year. He has thrown better than 210 feet in all five meets in which he’s competed. Only one other hammer thrower in school history has ever eclipsed 210 feet (teammate Nathan Loe last season).
McGuigan ranks 23rd nationally and fourth in the SEC in the hammer throw this year. He is the SEC’s top freshman and No. 2 in the country in the event.
This is now the fifth straight week that a Rebel has been named SEC Freshman of the Week. The previous winners wereShannon Ray on April 7, McGuigan on April 14 and Brooke Feldmeier on April 21 and April 28).
