Rebel Volleyball Adds Transfer Kate Gibson
Ole Miss volleyball continued to bolster its future with the addition of Memphis transfer Kate Gibson (Sedalia, Colorado), head coach Steven McRoberts announced Tuesday. Gibson will be eligible to play immediately.
“We’re really excited to have Kate join us this fall,” McRoberts said. “We recruited her out of high school when we were at Tulsa. She’s going to come in right away and compete on the outside or the right side. Kate is a six rotation player, which helps us with her ability to not only hit the ball well, but pass and play good floor defense for us. She also has a good serve.”
As a freshman for the Tigers last fall, Gibson led the team in kills (380) and kills per set (2.90), finished second on the team in aces (31) and third in digs (359) and digs per set (2.74). She also led the Tigers in points (451.5) and points per set (3.45).
Gibson ranked first among freshmen in the American Athletic Conference in kills and kills per set. She was named the Most Valuable Player at the Maroon Classic hosted by Mississippi State, after recording double-digit kills in all four matches, three of which went only three sets.
As a four-year letterwinner at Valor Christian High School, Gibson helped lead her team to the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) state tournament and was named to the 2013 CHSAA Class 4A All-State first team. She set the school mark for most kills (376) in a season in 2013. Gibson played club volleyball for the Colorado Juniors and in 2013 helped her squad to a fifth-place finish at the USA Junior Nationals/17 Open.
While her stats are good, McRoberts likes what she brings to the table that doesn’t show up in the box score.
“Kate had a great freshman year at Memphis, and we saw that firsthand when we played them last fall and when we played them in the spring,” McRoberts said. “She brings a strong work ethic, and she’s a high character individual. She possesses a lot of components that will help us be a better team in the fall, plus she brings a year of collegiate experience.”
An excellent student, Gibson was named to the Tigers 3.0 Club in the fall.
Gibson adds depth to a squad that finished with the most wins (22-10) in seven years in 2014, and joins six other newcomers who signed in the fall.
