Scott Weathersby Chosen by Astros in 2015 MLB Draft
Ole Miss baseball senior Scott Weathersby was selected by the Houston Astros in the 10th round of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft Tuesday evening, June 9. As the 289th overall pick, Weathersby became the 152nd Rebel in program history to be chosen in the MLB Draft.
Weathersby is also the 85th Rebel to be drafted over the past 15 seasons under head coach Mike Bianco. During his Ole Miss career, the right-handed pitcher made 47 out of his 51 appearances on the mound as a reliever. He posted a career 8-5 record with an ERA of 2.82 and struck out 118 batters over 111.2 innings of work. Weathersby excelled in the classroom as a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and also made a difference in the community, prompting him to be named to the SEC Community Service team twice.
One of two captains during the 2015 campaign, Weathersby was a leader to a youthful Ole Miss baseball team. As a senior, Weathersby posted a 2.62 ERA in 17 appearances, including the first four starts of his career as his last four outings as a Rebel. Through 55.0 innings of work, he has struck out 51 batters, while only walking 14. Perhaps the most impressive statistic of all was that he held opposing hitters to just a .216 average at the plate.
In his final year as a Rebel, the Hattiesburg, Mississippi native had plenty of highlights. Weathersby’s veteran presence on the mound showed against No. 1 Vanderbilt, April 10, as he retired 18 of the 21 batters he faced in a six-inning relief appearance. The right-hander struck out a career-high 10 hitters and got out of a bases-loaded jam, all while keeping the nation’s top-ranked team off the scoreboard. Behind Weathersby, the Rebels stayed alive in the extra-inning contest before winning in the 16th. The performance earned the senior SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week honors, and he built off the accolade in his next appearance, earning the win at Auburn, before tossing 1.2 scoreless innings to collect a save versus Alabama. Weathersby continued his dominance as he got the start against rival Mississippi State in the Governor’s Cup. The senior tossed a career-high seven innings without allowing a run, earning MVP honors and leading Ole Miss to an 11-1 victory. After the Governor’s Cup win, the Ferriss Trophy finalist started in the series finale at No. 14 Missouri and picked up the win.
Following 14 appearances during his sophomore campaign, Weathersby emerged with a 4-1 record and a 2.13 ERA as a junior. He was a primary factor in the Rebel’s run to Omaha, earning wins in both the NCAA Regional and Super Regionals to lock up a berth in the College World Series, where he would collect a victory against Texas Tech.
