Art, Landscaping Among Non-Credit Classes Offered This Fall at Northwest

Northwest-Mississippi-Community-College-15B45E20

Northwest Mississippi Community College’s Division of Continuing Education will offer some new and exciting classes during the spring semester to get your creative juices flowing.

All are non-credit classes held on the Senatobia campus. An online registration form is available at www.northwestms.edu/CONTEDFORM.

Active Music Making and Wellness (two sessions available): Make new friends and learn to play the music of your generation in a socially enjoyable and supportive setting at Lowrey Music Studio in Hernando. No knowledge of music or special skills are required.

This class will empower individuals to progress toward an improved health and well-being through the activity of playing keyboard music that is relevant to them. Participants will learn to become more relaxed, feel better and respond to stress in a positive way.

Through teachings of those passionate about helping others learn to make music, you will learn how to experience relevant music making as a viable redirection of leisure time.

Scholarships are available for groups within facilities, including independent living, skilled nursing, rehabilitation and respite care.

*There are two sessions available. The class will be taught on Tuesdays from 10-11 a.m., Sept. 8 – Nov. 10 (Sept. 3 registration deadline) or Tuesdays Oct. 6 – Dec. 10 from 10-11 a.m. (Oct. 1 registration). The fee for the class is $120. Classes will be taught at the Lowery Studio in Hernando.

NRA Basic Pistol Course (two sessions available) This is a course designed by the NRA to provide basic handgun training to students. It will focus on knowledge, skills and attitude required for basic handgun competency.

Specific topics will include gun safety, handling the gun, cleaning, storage, ammunition, marksmanship, responsibilities, carry options and the laws concerning handguns.

This course includes “live” shooting at a local range. Students may bring their own firearm and ammunition. However, if needed, a firearm will be available upon request.

Students will receive all course materials at the beginning of the course and the NRA Basic Pistol Course and the Mississippi Certified Firearms Training Program certificates upon completion of the class.

There are two sessions available. The class will meet on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. (Sept. 3 registration deadline) or Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. (Nov. 5 deadline). The fee for the class is $100. The class will meet in MAS 108.

Dream it, Draw it, Build it: This class explores the basics of landscape design. Each of the four night sessions will focus on designing a personal backyard oasis. Guest speakers who are experts in the subjects covered will be featured.

Classes will explore the following: “Do It Yourself” Drawing and Computer Design: Site planning for best backyard use and enjoyment; Plants That Turn a Brown Thumb Green: The top 10 plants that are easy to grow and lovely to look at; Outdoor Living Spaces – From Affordable to Outlandishly Extravagant: See presentations of real outdoor kitchens, patios, swimming pools and spa projects, including information on the newer “chlorine free swimming pool systems;” Design Lab: Get started on your backyard design project immediately. This class will help students start putting their back- yard project on paper. By showing students simple drawing techniques, they will be designing their next garden project in no time.

The class will be held on Mondays from 5:30 -7:30 p.m., Sept. 14- Oct. 5 in the Berry 104. The fee for the class is $40, and the deadline to register is Sept. 9.

Explore the Advantages of Abstraction in Art: Abstract art uses a visual language of shape, texture, color and line. Extraordinary compositions can be achieved that exist free from visual references. This type of art can be liberating since it seeks only to satisfy the whims of the artist. Using intuitive thinking, the artist is free to concentrate on his or her creative process.

This departure from accurate representation can be slight, partial or complete. Using a combination of paint, acrylic medium, graphite, collage and stencil, students will explore a combination of expressive techniques to complete two or more pieces of beautiful abstract art.

Participants will need to bring a sack lunch.

The class will be held on Saturdays from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m., Sept. 19 and 26 in Art 205. The fee for the class is $95, and the deadline to register is Sept. 10.

Glass Creations: In this four-week class we will learn about kiln-fired glass fusion while creating a variety of items from glass dishes and bowls to dichroic glass jewelry. This semester we will be adding two new techniques that you can learn and do at home.

Glass etching using stencils and other masking techniques can be done on any type of glass and requires no kiln firing.

In addition, we will be adding painting on glass with oven-cured glass enamels. This is a great opportunity to make unique items for those on your Christmas list.

The class will be held on Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 8-29 in Berry 101. The fee for the class is $99, and the deadline to register is Sept. 28.
