WTVA has reported that Oxford attorney Al Moreton and his wife, Becky Moreton have passed away following a two-vehicle accident yesterday afternoon in south Mississippi.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol reports a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 49 at Legion Lake around 3:09 p.m. Monday afternoon. MHP said a Nissan Versa, driven by Al Moreton, was coming off Legion Lake and attempting to cross to the southbound lane of U.S. 49 when a Ford Explorer traveling south struck the vehicle.

Al and Becky Moreton died at the scene, and the three people in the Ford Explorer were taken to the Baptist Hospital with injuries.

Al Moreton served as a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Aberdeen and Oxford while Becky served on the Oxford Pathways Commission.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the northern district of Mississippi has issued this statement today: “Al served our office and the entire legal community with great distinction and honor. The Moretons were stalwart members of Oxford’s community and will be sorely missed. Al Moreton was legendary in the legal profession. He was a prosecutor’s prosecutor. He was greatly respected throughout the Department of Justice.

“In recognition of his exemplary service the Department of Justice once stated: ‘Mr. Moreton, during his career of 38 years, has epitomized what we as the lawyers for the United States should follow as our guiding example. Al Moreton has left an indelible mark on those with whom he has worked, done with strokes of politeness, humor and goodwill but most of all with brilliance, integrity and humility. Al’s impact upon the U. S. Attorney’s Office here in Oxford is immeasurable. We have heavy hearts today. We have lost a great mentor and an even greater friend.'”

So sorry for the family and friends of the family. I always saw this couple walking around Oxford and they were always together. Such a tragedy.

It is a sad news to hear. People should be more careful while driving. They should obey the traffic signals.
