Olstad: Ole Miss Falls to Kansas State

The Ole Miss Rebels fell to 13-8 in a 69-64 defeat to the Kansas State Wildcats in the Big 12/SEC Challenge weekend.

The Wildcats protected their now 9-0 home non-conference record at Bramlage Coliseum by keeping Ole Miss point guard Stefan Moody uncomfortable on the court during Saturday’s game.

The two teams from different conferences seemed to match up well competitively in the first half, and at halftime Kansas St. was up 38-36.

Moody led the Rebels into halftime with 10 points and seemed to be on track to his 15th straight 20 point-plus game. Instead, the Wildcats didn’t let the SEC’s leading scorer make a single basket from the field the second half.

The rest of the Ole Miss squad didn’t do much better, only making 39.3 percent of their shots from the field for the game.  Anthony Perez led Ole Miss with 13 points, along with a two rebounds and steals.

The Rebel’s weakness was the Wildcat’s strength, who scored 46 percent from the field. A percentage like that is not out of the ordinary for Kansas St., who scores an average of 72.7 points per game.

D.J. Johnson came off the bench for the Wildcats to led the team with 14 points.

A Look Ahead:

Ole Miss will get three days off before they resume SEC conference play. They will face the Mizzou Tigers this Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. CT.

If there is one positive thing to take away from the Ole Miss loss Saturday afternoon, it is that the loss was a non-conference loss. Another positive aspect moving forward is that the Rebels will face a Missouri team that has lost six straight SEC matchups, losing each by an average of 17.6 points.

The Rebels will enter the game Wednesday 3-5 in the SEC, looking to turn things around.
