A direct relative of Charles and Medgar Evers, Ralph Moore, returned to Boys State on the University of Mississippi’s campus in Oxford this week to volunteer.

The Evers brothers were both important leaders in the NAACP and during the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi, Charles being the first African-American mayor of Mississippi. Moore is a graduate of Northwest Rankin High School and has been appointed to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland for Fall 2016, an impressive achievement.

Moore has so far been a leader in his swimming career as a Mississippi record holder and gold medalist in several categories. It seems that he, like his relatives, is determined, hardworking and ambitious.

When asked about his future and how he will continue his family legacy, Moore said, “When I get to the Naval Academy, my main goal is to leave a legacy…just go for as many leadership positions and be active in as many clubs as I can.”

With his involvement in Boys State, which helps prepare young men for the civic responsibilities of their futures, he is already on track.
