Oxford-University Airport Generates Metropolitan-Like Traffic On Game Day Weekends

Oxford-University Airport, a small regional airport, will become a metropolitan-like terminal and landing strip starting Thursday as fans from around the United States fly in to see the Ole Miss Rebels play the Georgia Bulldogs.

Game time is 11 a.m., but if the Ole Miss-Alabama game last week is an indication, Oxford’s airport and Enterprise rental car operations will be transformed into “quite a busy day” starting on Friday, according to airport worker Julie March.

Airport traffic includes single engine and twin engine aircrafts as well as high end corporate jets including G 550s, G4s, G5s, and Global Express jets which transport 15 people.

“For the Alabama game we had 90 aircrafts parked here at kickoff and an additional planes parked at Memphis and Tupelo,” March said.

Traffic gets hectic for both the airport with planes coming in and going out while Enterprise rental does a brisk business. Enterprise parks cars “ready to go” at the airport, according to Corderic Govan, agency manager.

“We rent about 70 vehicles generating $25-35,000 revenue for the weekend,” he said.

For many years the Oxford-University Airport was little more than a metal frame building. Oxford benefactors, Dr. and Mrs. James Rayner, changed all that and provided funding for a beautiful terminal building that welcomes guests to Clegg Field.
