Oxford is known for its food, and LB’s Meat Market, locally-owned since 2008, offers a unique range.
The Cunningham family opened LB’s Meat Market in the fall of 2008. Since then, not a lot has changed except the ownership. In the summer of 2015, Greg Jones bought the meat market from the Cunninghams. He worked at LB’s four years prior to buying it.
“The transition was real smooth for me, because I already knew how to run it when I bought it,” Jones said. “We are a one-stop shop. We’ve got everything you need to grill.”
LB’s Meat Market is located at 2008 University Avenue near Kroger. Jones prides himself in having unique items. LB’s makes their own sausage.
Zach Joos, the sausage-maker, said he puts time and effort into making it.
“I’ve got a lot of pride making something that people come in time in and time out for,” he said. “It’s pretty cool.”
LB’s also serves free-range chicken, local pork, and fresh seafood. They also sell seasonings and sauces used in marination. They have different meat cuts seasoned and wrapped.
Jones said he isn’t sure what he’ll do next with the market.
“A lot of people want me to put a location on West Jackson, which I would like to do when the opportunity is right,” he said.
At the moment, it isn’t the right time. LB’s has faced competition from restaurants like Neon Pig, but Jones said he isn’t worried. He tries to stay a step ahead of them. It’s possible he may add a restaurant component to the store because the lunch they serve has become popular.
“But once you establish yourself as a restaurant, then it is a different sort of business than what I am running now,” said Jones, who is young and in no hurry.
