MDOT Provides Safe Summer Travel Advice
Each summer, many Mississippians pack their bags and load their vehicles preparing for much-needed vacations. The Mississippi Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) main goal is to keep motorists safe, while providing efficient roads and highways for travel.
“Whether you plan to visit new places or return to favorite scenic areas, there are tips to help you have a safer drive,” said Melinda McGrath, MDOT executive director. “Ninety-four percent of crashes are caused by human error; so, please pay attention and help keep our roadways safe.”
Below are useful tips to help guarantee a safer drive:
- Avoid speeding, especially through work zones
- Always buckle up
- Don’t drink and drive, or ride with someone who has been drinking
- Share the road – you aren’t the only one out there, watch for pedestrians, bicyclists, children and animals
Extreme caution is encouraged during the summer months as this is peak construction season, and motorists encounter more work zones than usual. Memorial Day brings more traffic on the road; be sure to drive smart.
GOMDOT.com/drivesmartms provides helpful advice and encourages safer driving throughout the state. The site offers resources on how to drive through the most common work zones in Mississippi, how to navigate different road safety operations and how to drive safely during severe weather.
MDOT offers free resources for everyone. MDOTtraffic.com, MDOT traffic mobile app and Mississippi 511 can help you plan your summer road trips.
“This year marks Mississippi’s bicentennial anniversary; so, be sure to make more memories in this place we call home,” McGrath said. “Most importantly, make sure to stay safe and have fun over the summer.”
