Oxford Hosts Grenada in 2017 Home Opener on Friday Night

On Friday night, the Oxford Chargers play host to the Grenada Chargers at Bobby Holcomb Field. Kick off for this non-district game is set for 7 p.m.

Oxford (1-1) comes into this week’s game looking to bounce back after last Friday night’s 28-21 (2 OT) loss to Starkville. Oxford coach Chris Cutcliffe’s squad made a valiant comeback effort in the Little Egg Bowl game after being shutout in the first half but were unable to come away with the victory.
“We were down 14-0 at halftime,” Cutcliffe said. “I was really proud at that point they didn’t get negative at all, and they didn’t hang their head. Nobody had any doubt that we were going to come back and get back in the game in the second half. Their belief in themselves and their positivity towards each other was great to see,” Cutcliffe said.
When Oxford takes the field Friday, it will be the first home game of the 2017 season for the Chargers.

“I think your first home game is a big deal, it’s your first chance to play in front of your home crowd,” Cutcliffe said. “I think [the players] are determined to have a great week of practice, so they can go play well in front of the home town crowd.”
Grenada rolls into Oxford looking to right the ship after dropping their first two games of the season. Last Friday night, Cleveland Central defeated Grenada 25-12. The Grenada Chargers are led on the ground this season by senior Deon House, who is averaging 105 yards rushing per game.
“Grenada is always a physical football team,” Cutcliffe said. “Their tailback Deon House is a very physical player. We played them very recently in the first round of the playoffs last year, so you certainly have a team that is going to lay it on the line to avenge last year’s playoff loss to us. You know that you’re going to get their very best game. We’ve got to be well prepared and ready to play.”
