Oxford to Host DeSoto Central in Homecoming Game
The Oxford Chargers play host to DeSoto Central in the 2017 Homecoming Game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Thursday on Bobby Holcomb Field.
Oxford (4-3, 0-2) comes into this week’s matchup looking to bounce back after a 14-0 hard-fought loss to the South Panola Tigers last Friday. The Chargers defense was strong against the Tigers offense.
“We did a really good job for a big part of the game defensively,” Oxford head coach Chris Cuttcliffe said. “We were able for the most part to limit big plays. They have some big-play-type guys starting with Shegog at quarterback. They got loose for a couple of big plays and it really led to their two scoring drives. Overall we did a pretty nice job at limiting those big plays from their explosive offense.”
The Chargers have a quick turnaround from last Friday night with this week’s game being scheduled for Thursday night.
“It bumps up a few things one day in how we prepare,” Cuttcliffe said. “As far as some of the things we do on Tuesdays, we move to Monday, and things we do on Wednesdays move to Tuesday. It makes our Wednesday practice more than a typical day before a game type of practice, but nothing too drastic. I think the key is that with a short week our work needs to be that much more focused, more intense, to make sure that we are getting quality work.”
DeSoto Central is 3-4 on the season and 0-2 in the district. Last time out, Desoto Central was defeated by Horn Lake by the score of 43-14.
“I think their offense plays with good tempo, and they make you defend the entire field,” Cuttcliffe said. “Defensively, they are pretty multiple as they play with different fronts and different coverages. They do a lot of different things that you have to prepare for.”
