Chargers to Host Hernando for Senior Night
The Oxford Chargers return home to host the Hernando Tigers for senior night on Friday. Kickoff set for 7 p.m. at Bobby Holcomb Field.
Oxford (7-3, 3-2) has now reeled off three-straight region wins after a 17-7 victory over the Columbus Falcons. The Falcons ended the Chargers defensive shutout in the fourth quarter as they scored.
“Defensively I thought we played really well. We gave up a late touchdown in the last minute,” said Oxford head coach Chris Cutcliffe. “We played really well against a team that came out trying to throw the ball 50 times, and I thought we were able to hold up to the challenge.”
Prior to kickoff, the Chargers will honor 25 seniors who have laid it on the line for the blue and gold.
“Senior night is always a special thing and a great opportunity to thank those guys for all their hard work and contribution to our football program,” Cutcliffe said. “What we have talked about this week and especially this year is that we are fighting for a playoff spot. The best way for them to make senior night memorable is to be well prepared and have a great week of practice and go play great on senior night.”
Hernando rolls into town with a 1-4 record in region play and 4-5 overall on the season. The Tigers dropped a nail-biter last week to Horn Lake 14-7. Hernando’s only region victory came two weeks ago to DeSoto Central 14-2.
“Hernando offensively is one of the more balanced teams we have played against,” Cutcliffe said. “They are able to run it and throw it. So you have to be prepared to defend the entire field when you play a team like that. [Hernando’s] quarterback is a good player. He has had a good year. Defensively they have some good players up front. In particular, their nose guard is a great player. They have been consistent and they do some blitz’s and things that give you trouble and you have to prepare for.”
