UM Women’s Tennis Hires Grant Roberts as Assistant Coach
Ole Miss head women’s tennis coach Mark Beyers announced the hiring of Grant Roberts as the program’s new assistant coach. Roberts comes to Oxford from Colorado, where he was the assistant coach for the women’s program.
Roberts replaces Rebel All-American Robbye Poole, who left to work with former WTA world No. 5 Genie Bouchard.
“We are extremely excited to have Grant Roberts join our staff,” Beyers said. “Having both played and coached in the SEC, Grant understands what it takes to compete with the top programs in the country. Grant played for and learned from some of the top coaches in the country, Coach Dennis Emery and Coach Cedric Kauffmann at Kentucky. Grant is a very hard worker and passionate recruiter, and will undoubtedly help this program in all areas.”
Prior to his position at Colorado, Roberts served as the volunteer assistant coach for the men’s team at the University of Kentucky for three years.
He helped the Wildcats reach the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament in 2014 where the team finished 13th overall in the country. Roberts worked with ITA Ohio Valley Region Player to Watch, William Bushamuka who became a first-team All-SEC selection and a first-team All-American in 2017. Roberts also worked with SEC Co-Freshman of the Year, Ryotaro Matsumura in 2016. Matsumura also earned ITA Ohio Valley Region Rookie of the Year honors and was named to the All-SEC second team.
“I am extremely excited to be here at Ole Miss, Roberts said.” “Since I graduated from Kentucky my goal has always been to coach in the SEC, and I couldn’t imagine being in a better situation here. I can’t wait to hit the ground running this weekend!”
Roberts was a standout player at Kentucky. Despite battling injuries, he helped lead the Wildcats to the 2012 SEC Championship and the NCAA Sweet 16 three times, including the quarterfinals in 2010. Roberts is Kentucky’s all-time leader in matches clinched.
In the classroom, Roberts was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll three straight years.
Roberts earned his bachelor’s degree in communications at the University of Kentucky in 2014.
The Rebels are in Stillwater, Oklahoma this weekend for the ITA Kick-Off. They will face No. 24 TCU in the first round Friday at 1 p.m.
