Ole Miss men’s tennis’ No. 1 singles player, ITA No. 28 Nikola Slavic, was voted SEC Player of the Week by the conference’s coaches as announced on Wednesday.
Slavic played an instrumental role for Ole Miss in winning both its matches during ITA Kickoff Weekend in Oxford and advancing to the National Indoor Team Championships. Slavic competed at No. 1 singles for the Rebels, defeating two ITA top-40 players. Versus No. 22 Oklahoma, Slavic earned a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory versus No. 31 Mason Beiler. The Rebels defeated the Sooners, 4-1. Slavic’s come-from-behind 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1 victory versus No. 36 Robin Catry clinched the regional championship for Ole Miss versus NC State.
Slavic, a Junior from Stockholm, Sweden, was voted SEC Player of the Week for the first time in his Ole Miss career. He was voted SEC Newcomer of the Week twice in 2021. Slavic is the first Rebel to be recognized as SEC Player of the Week since Jan Soren Hain on Feb. 5, 2020.
Slavic has consistently earned wins throughout the 2021-22 season. He has compiled a 12-3 overall singles record and an undefeated 5-0 record in duals. Slavic has won four of five matches versus ranked opponents and won the individual title at the ITA Southern Championships.
Ole Miss and the Rebels moved up three positions to No. 15 in the ITA Team Rankings on Wednesday after winning the Oxford ITA Kickoff Regional. Slavic and the Rebels are taking on the Alcorn State Braves in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.
