Ole Miss Football Fans Shouldn’t Panic: Rebel Roundup

Your daily briefing on what’s going on with Ole Miss Athletics, including reasons why the Rebels’ football season is far from over.

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss football fans shouldn’t even be looking at the panic button, let alone contemplating pressing it.

The Rebels’ 20-17 upset loss to Kentucky isn’t the season-killer it would’ve been prior to this season. No. 12 Ole Miss, who fell six spots in the latest AP Top 25 Poll, can still make the 12-team playoff. But they’ve already used their “one-loss-is acceptable-for-SEC-teams” advantage with the playoff committee.

Ole Miss most likely can’t afford another loss for the simple reason a loss in SEC could open the door for that team to take a spot at 12-team playoff.

The Rebels’ remaining schedule is favorable enough for that to happen, too. Their toughest opponent is No. 5 Georgia, but the Rebels also play No. 19 Oklahoma and No. 13 LSU. Neither the Tigers or Sooners are “cupcake” games like the odds-makers will say about Arkansas, Florida and Mississippi State.

But as Mississippi State showed last Saturday, upsets can happen at anytime and silence a crowd of 100,000-plus fans. Ole Miss certainly knows it can’t coast into the playoffs now and has to ensure it wins its “winnable” games.
