Ole Miss didn’t hide anything from Deuce Knight.
When the Rebels went into the transfer portal last winter, everyone knew about the uncertainty surrounding Trinidad Chambliss’ eligibility for 2026. Knight knew Chambliss could come back. He knew Chambliss would be the unquestioned starter if he did. And he still picked Ole Miss.
That decision says a lot about Knight, and it says plenty about where Ole Miss is headed.
Chambliss got the green light for 2026, Walker Howard returned to add more experience, and AJ Maddox continued to develop. Ole Miss didn’t enter the season hurting for quarterbacks. What it did need was someone who could stabilize the future of the room, someone who could grow behind Chambliss and eventually take the reins. Knight has become exactly that.
There’s no quarterback battle drama this preseason. Chambliss is the present. Knight is the future. And both sides seem comfortable with that.
John David Baker liked Knight from the moment he arrived. Back in April, Baker said Knight was right on schedule, and that hasn’t changed.
“I’m really pleased with Deuce,” Baker said earlier this week. “My favorite thing about him is that he’s a sponge. He’s constantly asking questions.”
Baker also said Knight rarely puts the ball in the wrong spot. Timing can be fixed. Footwork can be cleaned up. But knowing where the ball should go is the foundation for any young quarterback.
“The thing about Deuce is that he rarely puts the ball in the wrong spot,” Baker said. “It might not be exactly how you want it or exactly on time, but he’s putting the ball in the right spot. If he’s doing that, we can work with it.”
The physical traits are obvious. Knight’s size and speed give Ole Miss a different element in the run game, and Baker said he feels comfortable with where Knight is in operating the offense.
“He adds a different element with his size, speed and what he can do running the football,” Baker said. “But as far as operating the offense, I’m really pleased with where he is and feel very comfortable with him.”
Chambliss sees the growth, too.
“Deuce is a great player, and he’s also a great person,” Chambliss said. “He’s eager to learn. He’s always asking me questions about what I saw on a certain play or how I’m reading a coverage.”
Knight didn’t come to Ole Miss for a guaranteed job. He came for development, stability and a chance to grow behind one of the best quarterbacks in the country. He came knowing he might not play meaningful snaps this season.
And now Ole Miss has a clearer future because of it.
Chambliss leads the present. Knight is learning the future. And for a program trying to stack winning seasons, that’s exactly the kind of quarterback room you want.
