Ignite Ole Miss: UM Compost Campaign Launches Today

Dear Ole Miss Family and Friends,

Did you know that nearly 40 percent of all food in America ends up in a landfill?

Due to a lack of oxygen, landfilled food cannot decompose properly and emits methane, a potent gas that traps heat in the atmosphere. On the other hand, composting everyday food waste greatly reduces the environmental impact of your breakfast, lunch and dinner.

At the University of Mississippi, students began composting food material from campus dining locations in 2013. Since then, we’ve diverted more than 50,000 pounds of food from landfills! The program produces nutrient-rich finished compost that can be used in campus and community gardens to grow fresh fruits and vegetables. Additionally, a portion of the finished compost is being used in the new campus garden to grow produce for the Ole Miss Food Bank.

We need your help to continue to operate this important program. Please join me today in making a donation to the UM Compost Campaign by visiting ignite.olemiss.edu/umcompost. You can also help by becoming an ambassador and sharing the UM Compost Campaign via e-mail and social media. Please tag your posts with #UMcompost.

Your contribution will help fund a student who will work on the project for a full academic year, impacting both the student’s college experience and the university’s commitment to resource stewardship.

Sincerely,

Anne McCauley
