Yesterday, four of five University of Mississippi students who were arrested after an alleged assault in October have had charges against them dropped.
Associated Press reports that Judge Mickey Avent ruled that the state did not meet its burden of proof in charging the Christian Guy, Austin Rice and Kyle Hughes with larceny and James Declan Basile with assault, hazing and larceny. However, Tucker Cole Steil is charged with felony-level assault and his trial will continue.
These charges stem from a violent incident that took place October 6 at the Sigma Pi’s Beta Mu chapter fraternity house. The victim, identified by the Daily Mississippian as Jeremy Boyle, was up late doing homework when he investigated a noise where he came across the defendants who were members of another fraternity on university campus. The campus newspaper reported that he “suffered a long contusion, ruptured eardrum, several broken teeth and a concussion.”
