On Tuesday morning, the world woke up and learned about the passing of Tennessee Vols’ women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt. Coach Summitt was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s that she has fought since August 2011. She was 64 when she passed.
Summitt spent 38 years on the sidelines coaching the Lady Tennessee Volunteers. She is regarded as a legendary figure in collegiate athletics with eight national championships under her belt.
Her son, Tyler, posted a letter on The Pat Summitt Foundation’s website: “She’ll be remembered as the all-time winningest D-1 basketball coach in NCAA history, but she was more than a coach to so many – she was a hero and a mentor, especially to me, her family, her friends, her Tennessee Lady Volunteer staff and the 161 Lady Vol student-athletes she coached during her 38-year tenure.”
