After 28 years of living his dream, Battalion Chief John Levy is retiring from the Oxford Fire Department.

“It’s just that time,” said Levy. “I’ve done about all I want to do in the fire service, and it’s time to do something else.”

The station held a retirement party for Levy this afternoon at Station One. Friends and family came by to congratulate Levy on his hard work and accomplishments over the years. His daughter Mallory Ales showed up with her three-year-old daughter Gracie.

“Everybody knows Daddy,” said Ales. “He’s always been there for everyone, no matter what. Everyone knows him as the fireman. Everyone knows him because of how he is. He’s just a good guy.”

Levy's granddaughter, Gracie, had her birthday party at the station this year.

Levy is born and raised in Oxford. As a child, he always dreamt of becoming a firefighter. He said, “It was all I ever thought about.” Now he leaves behind his legacy at the fire station as being hardworking and fair.
