The state-wide burn ban was lifted by Governer Phil Bryant last week, but the Lafayette County ban ran through the weekend. After considerable amounts of rain, conditions have been deemed safe for burning, and the ban was lifted by the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors on Monday night. The ban began in early September because of unsafe conditions that made wildfires a concern.
“The ban began due to a lack of rain which is the biggest factor, and as far as fire weather is concerned the temperature had been up, humidity down, and wind was up which basically creates a tinderbox for wildfires,” said Wes Anderson, fire coordinator of the Lafayette County Fire Department.
The ban is lifted, but Anderson and the fire department continues to preach safety to those who decide to exercise their right to burn.
“Be safe, and if there’s any question about safety, urge on the side of caution. Our best advice is don’t burn to close to any structures and be extremely careful with flammable liquids,” Anderson said.
