John Tyler Bass, an Oxford High School senior and Water Valley resident, is the 2017 North Mississippi recipient of the Murphy-Martin Endowment Fund, Grand Lodge of Mississippi, F. & A.M. Scholarship.

Each year, the $1,000 scholarship is given to a high school student who meets rigorous criteria and is chosen by a scholarship committee. Bass had to meet the criteria for the scholarship and receive recommendations by two Master Masons not related to him.

Bass currently has a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) at Oxford High School and received a Presidential Scholarship from Northwest Mississippi Community College, where he will attend college in the fall. His high school activities while at Oxford include National Honor Society, Beta Club and Latin Honor Society.  Also, Bass has also been a member of the high school Chess Club, Future Educators of America and Spanish Club.
