The city of Oxford has lifted a precautionary boil water notice after water samples came back from Jackson this morning clean.

“We are thrilled to report that our water samples came back clean and we are lifting the boil water notice effective immediately,” said Mayor Robyn Tannehill. “Again, we are so grateful for your patience and for the hard work of all of our city employees.”

Test results received from the Mississippi Department of Health on 50 samples from across the system confirm the water is properly treated and safe for drinking and other common uses of potable water.

City crews with Oxford Utilities worked all weekend to find and repair two water line breaks that happened after heavy rains caused road erosion that left the pipes cracked and exposed.

Most of the city was without water for several hours on Saturday. A precautionary boil notice was issued for all Oxford water customers. The 50 water samples were driven down to the Mississippi Department of Health in Jackson early Monday morning.

The University of Mississippi sent out a notice this morning informing students living in student housing that receives water from the city that the ban has been lifted.

Now that the precautionary boil-water notice is lifted:

Flush faucets for a total of 10 minutes to introduce system water throughout house plumbing.

Example:
1 faucet — run for 10 minutes
2 faucets — run both for 5 minutes
3 faucets — run each for 3-4 minutes

  • Flush any faucet a minimum of 2 minutes to ensure clearing of the line serving the faucet.
  • Discard any drinks, ice, food, etc, made during the boil water notice.
  • Rewash any food or drink contact items (knives, forks, plates, etc.) with “cleared” system water.
  • Check water filters (in faucets, refrigerators and elsewhere) and replace if necessary.
  • Do not use water from your hot water heater for drinking until several exchanges of the tank have occurred.
  • Run the dishwasher through a cycle or two before washing dishes.
