A 73-year-old man died Monday after falling out of his boat on Sardis Lake.

According to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department, at 5 p.m., deputies were dispatched to Wyatts Boat Landing in Harmontown for a possible drowning.

Upon arrival deputies and investigators learned that Junior Sides, 73, of Marshall County had been fishing when he stood up in the boat and fell out and drowned.

A friend in the same boat pulled Sides out of the water and people nearby attempted life-saving efforts but were unsuccessful.

Sides was not wearing a life jacket.

In a statement Tuesday, the sheriff’s department asks that everyone spending time on the water wear a life jacket.
