Pete Golding’s biggest concern about an experienced Ole Miss roster

Pete Golding has shown a fun personality in his press conferences as Ole Miss’ coach. He’s also able to make his points in a simple, easy-to-understand kind of way.

Like last week when talking about the differences between this year’s roster and ones in the past.

The 2023 roster walked into stadiums and took pictures. They were excited, overwhelmed and wide‑eyed. They were talented, but they were new to everything that comes with big stages and big moments.

This year’s team isn’t doing that.

They’ve played in the biggest environments. They’ve been in games that mattered. They’ve lived through pressure instead of imagining it. They know what it feels like when the lights hit and the noise rises.

Golding sees it every day.

“A couple of years ago in ’23, guys were taking pictures of new stadiums. It was like ‘what are we doing?’ I don’t think we have any of that,” he said after the first preseason practice. “This group has been there. They’ve played in these environments. They’re not going to be wide‑eyed.”

That’s the starting point. Experience helps. It settles nerves. It keeps players from freezing when the moment gets loud. But Golding has been clear: experience doesn’t replace preparation.

And that’s where he still sees a gap.

Experience reduces anxiety. It doesn’t create urgency.

Golding talked about anxiety and preparation in last Thursday’s press conference. He believes nerves come from not knowing what to expect or not being ready for what’s coming. Experience helps with that. When you’ve already played in Tuscaloosa, Baton Rouge and Athens, the moment doesn’t hit you the same way.

But he also sees the danger in leaning too much on experience. It can create comfort. Comfort can create sloppiness. And sloppiness shows up in the places he’s been pushing hardest.

“We still need more urgency. We still need more attention to detail. Experience doesn’t fix that.”

That’s the part he keeps hammering home. This team may not be wide‑eyed, but it also isn’t as sharp as it needs to be yet. Golding wants urgency in communication, urgency in corrections, urgency in the way players handle the little things.

“We need a greater sense of urgency when it comes to learning the playbook, communicating and paying attention to detail,” Golding said. “That’s what we have to continue improving.”

Right now, he doesn’t think they’re there.

Golding’s distinction is simple. Experience is backward‑looking. Preparation is forward‑looking.

Experience is about what you’ve already done. Preparation is about what you’re ready to do next.

“Just because you’ve been in these environments doesn’t mean you’re prepared for them,” Golding said. “You still have to do the work.”

That’s the challenge for a roster that finally has age, reps and real SEC mileage. They’ve grown up. They’ve seen the stage. They’ve felt the pressure. But they still have to build the habits that win games in October and November.

“We’re definitely not where we need to be,” Golding said. “We have a lot of work to do, and that needs to pick up a little bit, in my opinion.”

Golding isn’t worried about the moment. He’s worried about the details that decide the moment.

The takeaway

Ole Miss won’t be wide‑eyed in 2026. They won’t be overwhelmed by stadiums or crowds. They won’t be the team taking pictures during warmups.

But experience is only the starting point.

Urgency still has to rise. Attention to detail still has to sharpen. Preparation still has to catch up to the confidence that comes with age.

This roster knows what the moment feels like. Now it has to prove it’s ready to win it.
