Oxford’s finest took part in MDOT’s Adopt A Highway program this weekend.
Officers from the Oxford Police Department collected over 50 bags (that’s 3/4 of a ton) of trash along Highway 7 South, about one and a half miles from Highway 30 to University Avenue.
“Our officers wanted to take part in the program to give back to the Oxford community that has been so supportive to them over the years.,” explained Officer Donovan Lyons, who coordinated special events for OPD. “Our department would also like to raise awareness of the ongoing fight against litter in the city. Despite all the recent cleanups, (Big Event, Trash Bash) litter continues to pile up on our roadways.”
Officer Lyons points out that the fine for littering is costly, about $500 before any court fees are assessed. “Please help us spread the word to keep Oxford clean for everybody,” he said.
