Live art auction at Southside benefits UM Department of Art

By Tad Wilkes, Nightlife & Lifestyles Editor
Southside Gallery is hosting the University of Mississippi Department of Art’s Holiday Auction November 30, 2012, from 7 to 10 p.m., preceded by a cocktail hour starting at 6. And Southside offers a preview of the art all day.
Auctioneer Ron Lewis will lead the proceedings, sending highest bidders home with art. Proceeds go to the Department of Art, with a portion going to the artists themselves.
The funds will help the department “invite artists to visit in an academic setting,” says Allison Turner, Department of Art office assistant.
But another goal of the auction is simply to expose Oxonians to art they might not otherwise see.
“It’s a great way to showcase art downtown and connect with the Oxford community,” Turner says. “In the past, we’ve had a holiday sale within the department, but [this year] want to remind people we’re here and make great art.
