OM Men's Tennis Takes Down Vandy

With the win, the Rebels improved to 4-6 overall and 2-3 in the SEC, while Vanderbilt dropped to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
With the Rebels leading 3-1 and needing just one more point, sophomore Stefan Lindmark closed the deal, rallying to defeat Kris Yee 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
“We are excited to get two top 25 wins in the last week, especially on the road,” head coach Billy Chadwick said. “We are starting to play much better. I am really proud of Stefan, to come back after losing the first set like that and really put him away in the third. That guy is one of their better players. We are looking forward to another great match on Sunday against a very good Kentucky team.”
For the first time in the SEC and just the third time overall, the Rebels won the doubles point to take the early 1-0 lead. After the Commodore duo of Gonzales Austin and Ryan Lipman, ranked No. 1 in the nation, downed Lindmark and William Kallberg 8-3 at No. 1, Joe Rogers and Johan Backstrom won their second match in three together, 8-3 at No. 3. Nik Scholtz and Ricardo Jorge clinched the point with an 8-4 win at No. 2.
Lipman handed Kallberg a 6-4, 6-3 loss at No. 2 singles to even the overall score, but that would be it for the Commodores.
Backstrom and Jorge posted consecutive straight set wins at four and five singles to give the Rebels a 3-1 lead. Backstrom won a close first set 6-4 against Rhys Johnson, but shut him out in the second 6-0. Jorge won a tight first set against Anton Kovrigin and then a huge second set tiebreaker for a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory to set up Lindmark’s match clincher.
When play was stopped, the Rebels were up a set at one late in the second, and down a set and up 6-5 in the second at six.
Kentucky beat No. 21 Mississippi State 4-2 on Friday in Lexington to remain unbeaten in SEC play at 4-0.
