Spring wrap-up: Freeze upbeat about 2016 Rebels

At the end of spring practices, Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze reflected on what he saw from his players and what the outlook is for the 2016 Rebels. Overall, the Rebels’ coach was pleased with what he saw from his squad.

“A lot of work got done that was good this spring,” Freeze said. “I loved our energy and our attitude and our teaching session on uncommon men. We all have to make that a priority that that’s what we want to be in life, whether it’s sports or not.”

Though there were players out for all or part of spring due to injuries—Chad KellyFadol BrownIssac Gross, Rod TaylorTony Conner and Robert Conyers, to name a few—it is only spring, and fall is still months away, meaning Freeze and his staff have some breathing room. The above players should be a full-go once fall camp arrives in August.

We missed some kids. I wished we would have had Issac Gross, Tony Conner, Fadol Brown, Robert Conyers, Rod Taylor, Chad Kelly and some of those others to get the reps, but we didn’t. The ones we had out there I know got better. — Hugh Freeze

In spite of missing some key pieces to the puzzle, Freeze has many positives to take away from spring—not the least of which is the quarterback position. Freshman Shea Patterson and redshirt freshman Jason Pellerin took over the offense in the final two weeks of spring training as Kelly was recovering from sports hernia surgery.

Rebel To Watch For
Senior Alison Hovatter (Meridianville, Ala.) is playing in her final SEC Championship. And after having the team-best finish in the last six tournaments, she looks to cap her senior campaign with another strong performance.

Stacked Conference
The Rebels have surrounded themselves in good company all season, and that’s no different in Hoover. Nearly half of the Southeastern Conference is among the nations best according to Golfstat’s relative rankings. Ranked teams include Alabama (1), Georgia (5), Florida (7), Arkansas (8), South Carolina (23) and Texas A&M (25).

Head Coach Kory Henkes Quoted
On the the course…
“They all hit it well (in the practice round). This is a great course, and a good test of your ability for sure. It has a lot of big greens, so I think the winner is going to be whoever can hit a lot of greens and be a quality putter. If you have good touch out here, it will be a good week for you.”

On the team’s mindset…
“Overall I think the team is looking great. Their spirits are high so we are looking forward to a fun week in Hoover.”

With spring in full swing the Ole Miss volleyball team hosts Missouri State Saturday at Noon in a spring match. It will mark the final competition for the Rebels at the Gillom Sports Center until 2017.

The Rebels will play the 2016 season in The Pavilion, as the Gillom Sports Center undergoes a renovation beginning at the end of May.

Saturday’s match is open to the public and admission is free.

The Rebels have been practicing for about a month and began their spring competition in Chattanooga, Tennessee on April 2 with matches against Chattanooga, Tennessee Tech and West Florida. Last weekend they went to head coach Steven McRoberts old stomping grounds, Central Arkansas. McRoberts spent six years as the head coach leading UCA to back-to-back Southland Conference regular season titles in 2009 and 2010.

Ole Miss will welcome six new players to the program in July to join 11 returning members from last year’s team, who posted consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time in three decades and a school-record 13 home wins.
