Ole Miss All-American and SEC champion runner Craig Engels has been named to the 2016 Academic All-District 6 team for men’s track & field/cross country, as voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

By making the 11-person All-District squad, Engels is now eligible to be voted for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.

On the track, Engels has excelled in his two seasons as a Rebel. He most recently won the 2016 SEC outdoor 1500 meters, becoming the first Ole Miss athlete to be league champion in that event. The Pfafftown, North Carolina, native was a USTFCCCA first team All-American this March after helping Ole Miss place third in the distance medley relay at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Championships, the school’s highest national finish ever in the event. He’s also a two-time SEC champion in the DMR. Last year, he was a second team outdoor All-American in the 800 meters.

In his brief Ole Miss career, Engels owns the outdoor school record in the 1500 meters (3:38.82) and ranks top five in the indoor 800 (1:47.75), outdoor 800 (1:46.13) and indoor mile (4:01.19). Among NCAA athletes in 2016, he is No. 3 in the 1500 (3:38.82) and No. 19 in the 800 (1:47.06).

In the classroom, Engels maintains a 3.60 grade point average as a general studies major pursuing minors in business administration, environmental studies and theatre. He was a 2015 USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree in cross country and made the 2015 Southeastern Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll.
