Week 3 Will Be Separation Saturday for the SEC West

Week 1 was historic, Week 2 was a letdown, and Week 3 is when things will get cranked into overdrive in the SEC West.

When I sat down in Hoover, Alabama, in July to predict the order of finish in the SEC West, it became apparent that Week 3 would be Separation Saturday.

My picks for first and second place—Alabama and Ole Miss, respectively—square off in Oxford, Mississippi; third and fourth place—Auburn and Texas A&M—will battle on The Plains; fifth and sixth place—LSU and Mississippi State—will tangle on the Bayou.

Even if your preseason picks aren’t in that order or included 2-0 Arkansas, there’s no escaping just how massive this weekend is for what’s commonly regarded as the toughest division in college football.

It will define the 2016 landscape of the division.

Ole Miss Football: The Rebels Did What They Needed to Do Against Wofford

Ole Miss got an expected victory against Wofford on Saturday. Although it may not have been a work of art, they accomplished what they needed to accomplish.

The most important numbers from the Ole Miss Rebels’ football game against Wofford is the 38-13 winning score. The aesthetics to the game were not pleasing. Also the pace was a tad slow. However, the outcome was the most important factor in this game.

Ole Miss did not need to win by style points. They did not need to put on a show. The Rebels did exactly what they needed to do. They came home and got a sound victory over a less talented team. Anyone that was looking for more than that was looking for a little more than the Rebels were willing to show.

Soccer Drops Tight Match to South Alabama

ole-miss-soccer-stadium.png

Ole Miss soccer battled South Alabama tough for the full 90 minutes, but an early score in the ninth minute by the Jaguars was the difference in non-conference play Sunday night at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.

The Rebels (4-4-0) had their chances posting 13 shots with five on goal, but couldn’t quite find the rhythm as the Jaguars (5-2-1) won for the first time ever in Oxford.

A goal from Ashlynn Jones at the 9:26 mark was the only score of the match as she found the net off an Alexis Jordan assist on a score from the far post. The Jaguars finished the game with nine shots for five on goal and four corners.

Ole Miss goalkeeper Marnie Merritt posted four saves on the night including three in the first half. CeCe Kizer had the most looks of any Rebel with three shots, two of which on target, while Gretchen Harknett and Addie Forbus also posted two shots each.

Senior Mackenze Parma got the start at midfielder for the first time this season, while Courtney Carroll also started at midfield.

Following seven of the first eight matches on the road, the Rebels hit the road in back-to-back games for the first time next weekend with matches at LSU (Friday, Sept. 16) and at Tulsa (Sept. 18).

Rebels Rally to Top Northwestern 3-2 at Lipscomb Invite

After falling behind a set and letting the second set slip away, the Ole Miss volleyball team found another gear in the third and fourth sets to even the match before finishing off a 3-2 come-from-behind win against Northwestern in their final match of the Lipscomb Invitational.

In their fourth five-setter of the season and second in a row, the Rebels used a 4-0 run to break a 4-4 tie and go up 10-6. They closed on a 5-1 run to finish off the comeback. Three players notched double-doubles, including junior outside hitters Lexi Thompson and Kate Gibson, who both posted at least 20 kills in the match.

Northwestern raced out to a 10-2 lead to start the match and the Rebels never got closer than four. Down 20-10, the Rebels went on a 10-4 run to cut it to four, but on the ensuing play, an attack error gave the Wildcats set one 25-20.

Ole Miss had multiple chances to even the match, building a five-point lead late in set two and then having five set points at 24-19. A couple of kills from Northwestern and three attack errors allowed the Wildcats to reel off seven straight points and steal the set 26-24 and a 2-0 lead in the match.

After the break, the Rebels came out and took it to Northwestern, playing perhaps their best set of the year to win it 25-9 and extend the match. Set four began with Ole Miss getting out to a 6-3 lead. They never relinquished the lead on their way to a 25-22 win to force the decisive set.

Quick Hits
• Kate Gibson posted her fourth double-double of the season and second straight with 20 kills and 15 digs.
• Lexi Thompson notched her eighth double-double in 10 matches with a match-high 21 kills and 14 digs.
• Aubrey Edie recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 49 assists and 13 digs.
• Taylor Alexander added a career-high 16 kills and hit .522.
• Caroline Adams started at libero the final four sets and she notched a career-high 21 digs.
• The Rebels are now 37-2 in non-conference matches under head coach Steven McRoberts.
• Freshman Emily Engelken saw her first action as a Rebel, substituting in the first set and playing in all five sets. She finished with one kill, one assist and two digs.
• Ole Miss won for the second time against Northwestern, who leads the series 3-2.
• Five players posted double-digit digs, as freshman Nicole Purcell chipped in 15.

The No. 19 Ole Miss Rebels have an official kickoff time for their Sept. 24 matchup against No. 16 Georgia.

The Rebels will host the Bulldogs at noon ET on Sept. 24. The game will air on ESPN. The two teams last played in 2012, with the Bulldogs winning 37-10. That was Hugh Freeze’s first year at Ole Miss.

The last two times Freeze has matched up against Georgia head coach Kirby Smart, Freeze has come out on top. Freeze and the Rebels have defeated Alabama in each of the last two seasons, when Smart was the defensive coordinator. Freeze and quarterback Chad Kelly scored 43 against Smart’s unit last year in a 43-37 win in Tuscaloosa.
