It’s a little early to be making postseason travel plans, but it’s never too early to make projections.

USA Today’s Erick Smith posted his predictions for all college football’s bowl games based on the results through Week 3, and he has Alabama back in familiar territory.

He also has Nick Saban’s squad facing a familiar foe. In total, Smith projects 11 SEC teams will go bowling.

  • CFP title game: Alabama vs. Ohio State
  • Peach (CFP Semifinal): Alabama vs. Stanford

It looks like Ole Miss will receive some more help on offense Saturday against Georgia. Derrick Jones and Jeremy Liggins should return to action provided they uphold their end of the bargain.

As of Tuesday, Freeze said the decision as to when the players would return was still up in the air but it seems like a judgement has been reached after each missed the first three games of the season.

Softball Opens Fall Practice Friday

As the calendar officially turns to fall on Thursday, the Ole Miss softball team gears up for its fall season which begins this weekend.

The Rebels will officially begin fall practice Friday afternoon to kick off a busy couple of days which also features the team’s first intrasquad on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The 2017 Rebels will also hold intrasquad scrimmages on Wednesday, Sept. 28, andWednesday, Oct. 5. All fall scrimmages are free admission and open to the public.

“We are excited to get the full team together and to continue the process of building a championship program,” head coach Mike Smith said. “We were able to taste a lot of success last year, including a great showing in our first ever NCAA Regionals. Now these girls are itching to get back on the field as a full squad and are fired up to continue our vision of building character and winning championships.”

Ole Miss is coming off its strongest season in school history after qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever. The Rebels advanced all the way to the regional final round before falling to No. 3 Oklahoma, the team that went on to win the Women’s College World Series.

The Rebels finished the year ranked No. 24 in the final ESPN.com/USA Today poll, the first time the program has ever finished in the top 25. 41 wins also marked the most wins ever for the program in a single season, shattering the previous record of 30.

Despite losing six seniors to graduation, the Rebels return a majority of their everyday starters from last year’s run, which featured 13 underclassmen as the third-youngest team in the NCAA. Ole Miss also welcomes in a strong recruiting class of 12 players and returns 10 position players who started nearly every game.

Three pitchers from last year’s unit are back, and four new Rebels are progressing towards the spring looking to add depth in the circle.

The Rebels’ fall schedule gets underway Oct. 2 as part of Alumni Weekend, as former players and their families will be back in town back for a full weekend of activities. Ole Miss will face off with Meridian Community College at 1:30 p.m. and take on Delta State at 4 p.m. on Oct. 2. For the full slate of fall contests, visit the schedule pagehere.

Former Rebel Eugenia Conner Elected to Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame

Former Ole Miss women’s basketball great, Eugenia Conner, will be inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, posthumously, as a member of the 2017 Induction Class it was announced on Thursday.

Conner – the lone Ole Miss representative in the 2017 class – is one of six Mississippi greats who will be inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Other members of the 2017 Class are former Clarion-Ledger sports columnist Rick Cleveland; former Jackson State baseball coach/athletic director Bob Braddy; former Oklahoma and Southern Miss running back Marcus Dupree; Baltimore Ravens defensive backs coach Leslie Frazier, who played at Alcorn State; and former Mississippi State baseball player Jay Powell, who coaches at Jackson Academy.

Voting was done by a statewide selection committee representing all facets of Mississippi sports.

Eugenia Conner is one of the most decorated players to ever don an Ole Miss women’s basketball uniform. A Gulfport, Mississippi native, Conner became the first Ole Miss women’s basketball player to be named All-SEC first team all fours years and is still one of just two Rebels to earn that distinction. Recruited to Ole Miss by the legendary, Peggie Gillom, she formed a formidable inside combination with the younger Gillom, Jennifer.

The two-time SEC All-Tournament team selection, scored 1,993 career points and grabbed 1,177 career rebounds making her one of just three players to complete the 1,000-point, 1,000-rebound feat.

A stalwart on the defensive end, Conner’s name is etched in the Ole Miss record books. She ranks third all-time with 1,177 career rebounds and is second all-time with 194 blocked shots. Conner still holds the single-game record for rebounds in a game with 24 rebounds against Western Kentucky during the 1982-83 season, while her six rejections against Mercer in 1983-84 ranks second on Ole Miss’ single-game list. While a force on the defensive end of the floor, Conner is No. 4 on Ole Miss’ all-time scoring list with 1,993 career points.  With her 39 points against Cheyney State in 1983-84, she still ranks No. 3 on Ole Miss single-game scoring list.

The Rebels were a team to be reckoned with on the national stage during Conner’s career. Under the tutelage of the legendary Van Chancellor, Conner and the Rebels reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history in 1981-82 and returned each of her years at Ole Miss, advancing to the Elite Eight in the 1985 NCAA Tournament. Conner passed away in 1994 at the age of 30.

Conner becomes the 75th Ole Miss representative in the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, dating back to the inaugural class of 1961. She is the third Ole Miss women’s basketball player in the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.  She joins Van Chancellor, Peggie Gillom-Granderson and Jennifer Gillom as Ole Miss women’s basketball representatives in the Hall of Fame.

Ole Miss women’s basketball season tickets are available for purchase and are just $50. For additional ticket information, go to OleMissTix.com or call the Ole Miss Ticket Office at 1-888-REB-TKTS (732-8587.)

Ole Miss Travels to South Carolina for Lady Paladin

oxford-stories-golf2.jpg

This weekend, the Ole Miss women’s golf team hits the links for its second tournament of the 2016-17 season at the Lady Paladin Invitational in Greenville, South Carolina.

Hosted by Furman University, the Lady Paladin will be a homecoming of sorts for head coach Kory Henkes. A native of Easley, South Carolina, Henkes provides a wealth of knowledge of the Furman University Golf Course and is eager to see her team compete this weekend.

“We’re looking forward to it. I really think we can compete there. I think it’s going to be a great course for us,” Henkes said. “I’ve played there a bunch, (assistant coach Drew Belt) has played there several times, Katy Harris has played there. I think we have a good local knowledge of getting around the course and making good decisions.”

After Thursday’s practice round, the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins Friday at 8 a.m. CT. Ole Miss is in the first group to tee off, along with host Furman, Texas and Augusta. Senior Madisen Bentley will get it started for the Rebels from the first hole, followed by junior Laura Hoskin, Harris, senior Maria Toennessen and freshman Pi-Lillebi Hermansson. Sophomore Kie Purdom, who will compete as an individual for the Rebels, tees off at 10:30 a.m. CT.
