FNC Park will be a busy place this weekend as 11 high school softball teams take part in the inaugural Oxford Park Commission Fast Pitch Challenge.
Oxford’s Lady Chargers are serving as the host for the Challenge. Lafayette is also part of the tournament, while other standout programs such as Mooreville and Neshoba Central will be competing.
“Some of Mississippi’s best softball programs are taking part in our tournament. FNC Park is a great venue and a draw for teams to travel two or more hours to compete at,” said John Davis, the community relations director for the OPC. “We are really excited about the turnout and the weather that is forecast. We hope both will combine to provide a fantastic event for the teams and the parents of the players.”
Tupelo, West Union, East Union, Booneville, Myrtle, Independence and Grenada round out the field.
There are a few guidelines for the teams and games this weekend. There are no chewing gum and no sunflower seeds allowed, games have a full 75-minute time limit and finish the inning in progress-games must have a winner, no metal cleats allowed-turf shoes or molded rubber cleats are fine. All games are played on the turf fields, and spectators have to pay an entrance fee of $5 if they do not have a district or state pass approved by the MHSAA.
