LHS & OHS Face Off In Friday's Annual "Crosstown Classic"

Published

This week, two familiar foes will meet on the gridiron in the annual Crosstown Classic between the Oxford Chargers and the Lafayette Commodores. Kick off for this game is at 7 p.m.

“It’s a long standing rivalry and I think it’s a lot of fun for the community and players,” Oxford coach Chris Cutcliffe said. “Our focus is to go out and have a great week of practice and prepare and play great Friday night. It’s no different than any other game when it comes down to it you have to go play, I do think it is a lot of fun for the communities, the schools are so close together, and they know each other so well. It adds an interesting twist to it compared to other rivalries in high school sports.”
Oxford (2-1) comes into this week’s game with Lafayette after blanking Grenada 22-0 last Friday night. The Chargers were led on the field by senior running back Hiram Waddlington Jr. with 120 yards rushing and scoring one touchdown.
“Obviously to get a shutout against a great football team with a great tailback is a great accomplishment,” Cutcliffe said. “Also a great accomplishment for our defense and proud of our players, our coaching staff that I thought did a great job getting our guys ready to play on defense. Offensively we had a lot of guys play well I thought we played well up front and I thought both of our quarterbacks played well.”
Lafayette looks to bounce back in this Crosstown classic against Oxford. The Commodores are 0-3 on the season after moving up from 4A to 5A this season.
Last Friday night, the Commodores dropped a tightly contested game to North Panola by the score of 34-21.
“They are the defending state champions and an outstanding team. They have two great tailbacks obviously Brandon Turnage is a phenomenal player,” Cutcliffe said. “They have a lot of ability and a lot of talent. We know how good of a football team they are and how good of a challenge we are going to have on Friday night.”
