The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council Asks Oxonians For Ideas

YAC-300x224.pngIn the art world in Oxford, you’re the boss! The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council is accepting awesome ideas for their 2017 Gallery Series this month.

Staff at the YAC curate a monthly art show at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center that reflects the interests and diversity of Oxford. The Oxford Art Crawl, on the fourth Tuesday of the month, January through October, is a celebration of new, original artwork of local artists based on the themes.

“We want the Gallery Series to reflect the passion, beauty and diversity of Oxford. The town is a Mecca for the arts and a place where you can enjoy a football game, a dining experience and then an enriching art experience,” said Wayne Andrews, director of the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council. “The scope of entertainment brings people back to Oxford and is something we’re proud of.”

Prizes will be given to the adult and student under the age of 18 that submit an awesome idea used as a theme for the Gallery Series.

“Art paints a rich cultural history. It tells the story of our state and our region. The Gallery Series is a great way for the community to challenge and inspire local artists,” said Betsy Webster, the AmeriCorps VISTA serving at the Yoknapatawpha Arts Council.

The Gallery Series features art of every media including painting, fiber, sculpture and even micro museum installations. Some themes in the past have been “Wherefore Art Thou?” which was tied with the First Folio exhibit at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts, the Birdhouse Show benefitting Habitat for Humanity, and Dressed and Undressed, a partnership with Bozarts Gallery in Water Valley.

The survey is available online at oxfordarts.com or you can submit your idea by email to outreachyac@gmail.com through September 30.
