Proud Larry’s tonight hosts a Christmas party that lets you truly be yourself—and if that means Garfield-in-a-Santa-hat sweaters and showing just a little too much cleavage, so be it.
Doors open for the Tackie Townie Christmas event at 8 p.m., with live music beginning at 9 p.m. Performers will include Jimbo Mathus, Pithecanfunkus Erectus, Ben Ricketts, Rocket 88 and Ben Carlton.
Tickets are $10, and all proceeds benefit Oxford’s Interfaith Compassion Ministry, which provides assistance to local people with basic needs, including rent, utility bills and prescription drugs.
Jimbo Mathus, a founder of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, based his musical, “Mosquitoville: Mississippi Songs and Stories,” on a journal kept by John Parrot in Sledge, Mississippi, who worked at a lumber camp called Mosquitoville in the 1880s. The video below shows a full-length performance of Mathus’ Christmas version of “Mosquitoville,” performed at the Panola County Playhouse in Sardis.

Rocket 88 features veteran Oxford musicians Rosamond Posey (vocals and rhythm guitar) and Jamie Posey (vocals, lead guitar and harmonica), along with Robert Chaffe (keyboards), Ryan Rogers (drums) and Nathan Robbins (bass). Their music blends Americana with hill-country blues and straightforward rock-and-roll.
In the video below, Rocket 88 performs the title song from their album, “Broken Man,” at Music in the Hall in May 2009.

Ben Ricketts, an experimental pop musician from Corinth, describes himself as “Mississippi’s genre-jumping weird kid.” He has released songs in genres ranging from folk to dance and trip-hop and performs live with his table of electronics and trusty mannequin, Catalina.
