For those who enjoy cracking open a good book in the Mississippi sunshine, the annual Mississippi Book Festival kicks off on the capitol grounds August 18 at 9 a.m.
The festival in Jackson is welcoming more than 150 literary figures including Salman Rushdie, Jesmyn Ward, Jon Meacham, Rick Bragg, Julia Reed and Angie Thomas.
Attendance exceeded 6,000 last year, and festival executive director Holly Lange said she plans to see more new faces this year.
“The festival has become a regular event on the schedules of thousands of book lovers throughout Mississippi and beyond, as we’ve drawn the best and brightest authors and thought-provoking panels to help us celebrate the love of books,” Lange said. “The entire day is filled with activities, entertainment, food, and, of course – books – for every age and for every interest you can imagine!”
The event brings speakers from different literary spectrums, including civil rights, music, politics, cooking, photography, Southern history, poetry and mystery.
