College football has gotten used to sudden rule changes, but the recent injunction from a Colorado judge granting another year of eligibility to an entire class might be the most awkward one yet.
The ruling came down last Friday, right as teams were getting ready to start preseason camps, rosters were already set, and coaches were trying to finalize depth charts.
Pete Golding, true to form, didn’t sugarcoat the situation. He called the timing what it is: bad.
“The timing of this isn’t perfect for creating a lot of opportunities for certain people when you’ve already had a roster limit,” Golding said after Thursday’s practice.
That’s the heart of the issue. The rule may open doors for some players, but it doesn’t magically create roster spots. Ole Miss has already built its team based on the rules that existed when Golding took the job. You can’t retroactively hold space for something that didn’t exist.

Quiet conversations, not open invitations
Golding acknowledged that Ole Miss has talked with a few players from the class of 2022 who are in other places. These aren’t recruiting pitches. They’re check‑ins.
“It has been about their health, their status and what that might look like,” he said. “But it has been more from the standpoint that, if somebody were to get injured during camp and something became available, you would have someone to go to who has actually been in this system.”
That’s the difference between interest and intent. Ole Miss isn’t actively trying to bring back 2022 players. They’re simply preparing for the possibility.
Why Ole Miss isn’t holding roster spots open
Golding made it clear that the roster is full and the numbers are what they are. There’s no wiggle room, no COVID‑era exemptions, no hidden scholarships.
“Our numbers are what they are right now, and we’re where we need to be,” he said.
That’s why the timing matters.
If the NCAA had done the right thing an allow the new five-for-five eligibility rule to apply to athletes from the class of 2022, this would be an entirely different story. Players might’ve chose to stay in college rather than go pro or begin their post-college careers. Coaches might’ve have targeted different players in the transfer portal.
But having this ruling come down just days before most programs were to begin their preseason practices forces them to react instead of strategize.
Golding isn’t going to leave a hole in his roster based on something that might not materialize. He’s going to operate under the rules that exist today, not the ones that might exist tomorrow.
The compliance piece
Golding gave a lot of credit to Senior Associated A.D. for Compliance Taylor Hall, Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics Keith Carter and the compliance staff. They monitor the courts, track proposals, and keep coaches informed about what could be voted on. But even with that information, Golding refuses to build a roster around hypotheticals.
“I’m always going to operate based on the rules that are in place right now and then have a plan for if something does occur,” he said.
That’s the balancing act every coach in the country is trying to manage. You want to be prepared, but you can’t run your program based on rumors or potential votes. You can’t leave scholarships open for something that may never pass.

Ole Miss isn’t treating eligibility injunction ruling as a loophole or a shortcut. They’re treating it like a puzzle piece that may or may not fit. Golding’s stance is simple: prepare for the possibility, but don’t build your roster around it.
It’s a reminder that even in a sport full of sudden changes, stability still matters.
And for Ole Miss, the roster they have today is the roster they’re rolling with.
