Eating Oxford
Oxford Listed among Nation’s Top College Towns for Food and Drink
College towns have to have options to cater to a wide range of tastes and personalities, and Oxford has been able to squeeze a lot of flavor into a little land mass.
Yahoo! ranked the nation’s college towns on their tasty treat and libation scenes, and Oxford came in No. 6 and the top spot for Southern towns. SEC rival Athens also made the cut.
The sites recommendations for Oxford are:
Drink here: While a tailgate could be a cop-out first answer in lesser college towns, tailgating in the Grove is a cocktail party – just find a tent, be polite, and you’ll have a bourbon-laden Solo cup in your hand in a surprising amount of time. But for professionally made cocktails, head to the upstairs balcony of Currence’s City Grocery or Bouré, two must-eat restaurants on the square, or the bar at Snackbar.
Eat here: Ajax Diner on the Square serves one of the best damn meat-and-three lunches in the South. For a pulled pork sandwich or classic, simple burger, go to Handy Andy. On the other end of the spectrum, head back to Currence’s Bouré or Snackbar or City Grocery for fine dining, Southern-style. And because Taylor, MS is practically Oxford, there’s Taylor Grocery and its deservedly famous catfish.

I moved back to Oxford from the Coast and dined out frequently there with friends at excellent restaurants with reasonably priced food like Copeland’s in Slidell and Dempsey’s in Kiln. I was retired and with limited income but had no problem in affording the restaurants. This is not true in Oxford. Once a month I go out for lunch with a group of retired Oxford friends whom I have known since childhood. After frequent researching, it appears that most restaurants here are extremely expensive and out of our price range. I thought Oxford is supposed to be a great place for retired people. Apparently this does not include dining out for ordinary retired people on limited income. Thank you Ajax for your great food at affordable prices.
